Childbirth Classes

At the Family Birth Place at MetroSouth Medical Center, we believe the birth of your baby is a family event. While every birth offers unique challenges, experience shows that preparation is the best way to create a positive birth experience for mother, baby and family.

Classes are taught by MetroSouth’s registered nurses and health educators, and are limited in size – so register early in your pregnancy to join.

Basics for Successful Breast Feeding Classes - This class will provide basic information for new and expectant mothers who have an interest in breast feeling, including breast feeding advantages, proper techniques and how to cope with problems. Professional breast feeding products are available through the lactation office.

Lamaze Weekend Class - A 2-day weekend class that covers all the regular childbirth education. Convenient for active, working couples. Covers relaxation, breathing and pushing techniques, labor, vaginal and cesarean birth, infant care, and postpartum emotional and physical changes. Includes a tour of the Family Birth Place. (Recommended for those in their last trimester of pregnancy.)

Mom’s Having a Baby’ Sibling Class - This course is designed to help prepare children from 3-10 years old for the birth of a new sibling. They will learn what babies look like; diapering, feeding and other care; and where mom and the baby will stay while in the hospital. Children should bring a doll or stuffed animal on which to practice each lesson. Parents are asked to remain during the class – and cameras are welcome. (So that your child retains the material presented, please register for the class that is nearest your eighth month of pregnancy.)

Prepared Childbirth Class - Couples will learn about the labor and delivery process; cesarean delivery; relaxation and breathing techniques; the use of medication and anesthesia; and newborn care. A tour of the Family Birth Place is included. (Recommended for mothers-to-be in their last trimester of pregnancy.)
