Annual exams are one of the best things a woman can do to ensure she remains healthy throughout her life. The gynecological team of doctors at MetroSouth Medical Center is experienced in helping women through every stage, including:

  • Annual exam
  • Pelvic floor disorders (urogynecology)
    • Significant problem in women caused by multiple pregnancies, obesity, age
    • Incontinence
    • Treatments can include specialized exercises, biofeedback and minimally-invasive surgery
  • Uterine Fibroids
    • What are fibroids? Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that occur in up to 50 percent of women. Although they only cause symptoms in around a quarter of cases, they remain the most common cause of hysterectomy before menopause. Fibroids are not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer.
    • Uterine fibroids can take years to develop and often present symptoms that can be caused by a number of other conditions, such as endometriosis, pelvic infection and ovarian cysts. Accurate diagnosis is the first step toward successful treatment. Your MetroSouth doctor will work with you to devise an individualized treatment program.
  • Laproscopic treatment of fibroid tumors
If your fibroids are few in number and small, a laproscopic treatment may be used. Narrow instruments are inserted through small incisions in your abdomen to remove the fibroids from the uterus.
  • Laproscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy
In some cases, removing the uterus through surgery, called a hysterectomy, is the most effective way to treat uterine fibroids. In a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through your vagina (birth canal). Typically, this procedure is shorter, less costly and easier to recover from than a traditional hysterectomy. If the patient has an enlarged uterus, however, the vaginal hysterectomy may not be an option.
  • Uterine artery embolization
In this minimally-invasive treatment for uterine fibroids, a doctor injects small particles into your uterine’s arteries with the goal of blocking the small vessels that feed the fibroid tumors. In essence, the procedure aims to starve the tumors, forcing them to die. This procedure is also referred to as a uterine fibroid embolization.
  • Hysteroscopy
When fibroids reside inside the uterine cavity, a minimally-invasive approach called hysteroscopy allows doctors to remove tumors with no incision at all. Instruments and a camera are inserted through the vagina and cervical canal into the uterus, allowing for fibroid removal.
  • Endometrial ablation
Endometrial ablation is used to treat heavy bleeding due to menstruation. Each month, a woman sheds the lining of her uterus, called the endometrium. When bleeding is heavy or lasts longer than normal, some women choose a treatment option called endometrial ablation to control the bleeding. The treatment destroys, or ablates, the uterine lining. The endometrium heals by scarring, which typically results in less or no uterine bleeding. Endometrial ablation treats the uterus lining and does not affect hormones or require removing the uterus.
The procedure can be done by:
    • Laser beam, called laser thermal ablation
    • Heat, called thermal ablation
    • Electricity
    • Freezing
    • Microwave
